Records
John Cale's influence extends far beyond his own recordings. As a founding member of the Velvet Underground, he helped create two of the most influential albums in rock history: The Velvet Underground & Nico and White Light/White Heat. His production work on Patti Smith's Horses and the Stooges' debut defined the sound of punk. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, he has been honored with a CBE in 2025 for services to music. His solo album Paris 1919 is frequently listed among the greatest albums of all time.

Cale co-founded the Velvet Underground, whose debut album is ranked #13 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums list.
Longest-serving producer of punk's foundational albums
Produced the Stooges' debut (1969), the Modern Lovers' demos (1972), and Patti Smith's Horses (1975), shaping punk rock.
