John Barrasso

John Anthony Barrasso III arrived in Reading, Pennsylvania on July 21, 1952, before trading the East Coast for the open skies of Wyoming. He earned his bachelor's degree and medical doctorate from Georgetown University followed by a residency at Yale University. After completing his training, he settled in Casper to practice orthopedic surgery, establishing a private career that would later inform his political views on healthcare. His path to Washington began with a narrow loss in the 1996 Republican primary against Mike Enzi. Barrasso found success two years later when voters elected him to the Wyoming State Senate, where he served until 2007. That year changed his trajectory when incumbent Senator Craig L. Thomas died. Governor Dave Freudenthal appointed Barrasso to fill the vacancy, and he won a special election in 2008 to keep the seat. He secured full terms in 2012 and 2018 while rising through party ranks to chair the Senate Republican Conference in 2018. By 2021, Barrasso became the dean of Wyoming's congressional delegation after Enzi retired. His influence grew further in 2025 when he assumed the role of Senate majority whip, positioning him as the second-highest ranking Republican in the chamber.
