    About

JO1 formed through Produce 101 Japan season one which aired in 2019. The show drew massive attention across Japan as viewers voted to create a new boy group. On December 11 2019 the final lineup of eleven members was revealed. They trained intensely in the following months and debuted on March 4 2020 under Lapone Entertainment a joint venture between Yoshimoto Kogyo and CJ ENM. Their debut single Protostar topped the Oricon weekly singles chart on release day.

The group released a string of hit singles and albums throughout the early 2020s. They moved from bright dance pop into more dramatic EDM and trap sounds before exploring emotional ballads and global pop hybrids. By 2022 they had secured multiple number one albums including Kizuna and Equinox. The band expanded into arena tours across Japan and made their first appearances in North America by the mid 2020s.

Two original members departed in 2025 and 2026 yet the remaining nine have kept the same drive. They continue to drop new music that mixes sharp choreography with strong vocals. JO1 stands out as the first permanent group to emerge from the Produce 101 franchise which usually created temporary project acts. Their steady chart success and loyal fan base show how far they have come in a short time.

    Formation Story

The story of JO1 begins with the launch of Produce 101 Japan in 2019. Organizers brought together 101 male trainees from various backgrounds to compete in a highly structured survival show. Contestants trained rigorously in singing dancing and stage presence while cameras followed their progress. National producers cast votes each week to decide who would advance.

The intense competition culminated in the finale on December 11 2019. Millions watched as the top eleven names were called one by one. Those eleven young men immediately began preparing for their professional debut. Under Lapone Entertainment they polished their skills in a condensed pre debut period that emphasized the Korean idol training model alongside Japanese pop sensibilities.

On March 4 2020 they released Protostar. The title track Infinity burst onto charts and music shows with its anthemic chorus and precise group choreography. The debut single hitting number one on both Oricon and Billboard Japan Hot 100 sales proved that the national producers had chosen well. From that moment JO1 operated as a permanent act rather than a limited time project setting them apart from every previous Produce 101 group.

    Musical Style

JO1 built their sound on contemporary J pop with clear K pop production influences. Early tracks like Infinity and La Pa Pa Pam delivered bright dance pop and EDM with catchy hooks and powerful group formations. As they progressed the music grew heavier with trap beats and stronger rap sections on songs such as Born To Be Wild and OH EH OH.

By the Kizuna era the group incorporated more mid tempo emotional tracks that highlighted their vocal abilities. Junki Kono often took center stage for high notes while the rap duo of Takumi Kawanishi and Sukai Kinjo added contrast. Later releases experimented with Latin rhythms hip hop and R and B flavors. Producers from both Japan and overseas helped shape these evolving tracks.

Lyrics frequently touch on themes of unity personal growth and chasing dreams. The group pays close attention to performance details. Their choreographies mix sharp powerful moves with moments of synchronization that fans study closely. This blend of accessible melodies complex arrangements and high level dance has become their signature approach.
