Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Kate Hudson arrived in the world on September 12, 1981, in Chicago, Illinois. Known affectionately as J.Hud, this singer, actress, and producer built a career that spans music, film, theater, and television. Her journey took off when she finished seventh on the third season of American Idol in 2004. That platform launched her into a recording contract with Arista Records and eventually led to a self-titled debut album in 2008. The record hit number two on the Billboard 200 and secured a Grammy for Best R&B Album. She followed up with I Remember Me in 2011 and JHUD in 2014, both landing in the top ten before she returned with The Gift of Love in 2024 after a decade-long break. Her acting debut stunned audiences in the 2006 musical Dreamgirls. Hudson played Effie White and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the youngest African-American winner of that category. She continued to take on significant roles like Aretha Franklin in Respect (2021) and appeared in projects ranging from Sing to Cats. On Broadway, she starred in the 2015 revival of The Color Purple and later earned a Tony Award as a producer for A Strange Loop in 2022. This collection of wins across different mediums made her the youngest woman and third African-American to achieve an EGOT status by 2022. Television work rounds out her impressive resume. Hudson served as a coach on both the British and American versions of The Voice between 2017 and 2019, becoming the first female coach to lead a winning team on the UK show.
