    Overview

In 1963, director Don Chaffey brought the ancient Greek myth of Jason and the Argonauts to the screen in a Technicolor fantasy adventure that remains a touchstone of the genre. The film follows Jason (Todd Armstrong), a hero returning to Thessaly to claim his rightful throne from his treacherous uncle, King Pelias. Pelias sets an impossible condition: retrieve the legendary Golden Fleece from the distant land of Colchis. With the gods watching from Olympus, Jason assembles a crew of Greece's greatest heroes, including Hercules (Robert Shaw) and the ship's builder Argos (Laurence Naismith), and sets sail aboard the Argo.

The journey is a series of mythic encounters, from the bronze giant Talos to the harpies tormenting the blind prophet Phineas. The film was produced by Charles H. Schneer with a budget of $3 million and features Ray Harryhausen's pioneering stop-motion animation, which brings its creatures to life with a handmade charm that CGI has never quite matched. Though it grossed only $2.1 million at the box office, its reputation has grown steadily, and it is now celebrated as a landmark of fantasy cinema.

Bernard Herrmann, fresh from his Hitchcock collaborations, composed a sweeping orchestral score that underscores the adventure. The film's blend of heroics, divine meddling, and spectacular effects has influenced generations of filmmakers, from Steven Spielberg to Peter Jackson, and its skeleton fight sequence is often cited as one of the greatest action set pieces ever put on film.

Jason, a mortal hero, returns to his homeland of Thessaly after years at sea, only to find his uncle Pelias on the throne. Pelias, who murdered Jason's father to seize power, offers a twisted bargain: if Jason retrieves the Golden Fleece from Colchis, he can have the kingdom. The gods take notice. Zeus watches with amusement, while Hera, nursing a grudge against Pelias, decides to champion Jason's cause in secret.

Jason commissions the building of a great ship, the Argo, and recruits a crew of legendary heroes, including the mighty Hercules, the musician Orpheus, and the shipwright Argos. Pelias's son Acastus joins the crew with hidden motives, adding a layer of distrust to the voyage. The Argonauts set sail, and their first major challenge comes when they encounter the bronze giant Talos, a towering mechanical colossus that attacks the ship. They manage to defeat it by exploiting a weak point, but not without loss.

Their next stop is the island of the blind prophet Phineas, tormented by harpies that steal and defile his food. The Argonauts drive off the harpies, and in gratitude, Phineas reveals the route to Colchis. Tensions rise among the crew, particularly between Jason and Hercules, who grows restless and eventually leaves the expedition after a quarrel. The film also introduces Medea, the daughter of King Aeëtes of Colchis, who becomes entangled in Jason's quest.

As the Argo approaches Colchis, Jason learns that Aeëtes guards the Golden Fleece fiercely. Medea, possessing her own magical powers, falls in love with Jason and agrees to help him, despite the risk to herself. The crew faces a series of trials, including a clash with Aeëtes's forces, and Jason must navigate the king's deceptions. The film builds toward a final confrontation in the sacred grove where the Fleece hangs, guarded by a monstrous serpent and, ultimately, by warriors animated from the dragon's teeth.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion effects remain the star, but the film's episodic structure and dated acting keep it from greatness. Still, it's a must-see for fans of practical effects and classical mythology.
