Bayona has won 12 Goya Awards, more than any other director in a single year for Society of the Snow. He is the only Spanish director to have won the Goya for Best Director four times. His film Society of the Snow received two Academy Award nominations, making it one of the most internationally recognized Spanish films in recent years. Bayona's ability to move from intimate dramas to blockbuster spectacles is rare among Spanish filmmakers, and he has been called one of the most versatile directors working today.
