ITV2

ITV2 is a British free-to-air television channel owned by ITV plc, the United Kingdom's largest commercial broadcaster. Launched on 7 December 1998 as a digital-only companion to the main ITV network, it was created to fill capacity on the new ONdigital platform and offer viewers a secondary outlet for entertainment content. The channel targets viewers aged 16 to 34, competing directly with E4 and BBC Three. Its programming mix includes reality shows, imported American series, animated comedies, and films. ITV2 became famous for airing Love Island, a reality dating show that debuted in 2015 and drew peak audiences over 3 million, helping the channel achieve the largest audience share among all UK secondary channels for several years. Other key shows include The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE) and Celebrity Juice. ITV2 is broadcast across the UK via Freeview, Sky, Virgin Media, Freesat, and the ITVX streaming service.

The channel operates as part of ITV plc's broader media portfolio, with no separate CEO. Programming decisions fall under ITV's Director of Television, Kevin Lygo, while the overall head of ITV is CEO Carolyn McCall. ITV2's headquarters are at ITV London Studios on the South Bank, with additional offices in Manchester and Leeds. The channel is funded by advertising; ITV plc reported total external revenue of £3.96 billion in 2023, with advertising revenue (including ITV2) at approximately £1.73 billion.

ITV2 has played a major role in shaping British reality television culture. Love Island became a national summer ritual, influencing fashion and language, and has been exported to over 30 countries. TOWIE helped define the structured reality genre, while Celebrity Juice pushed comedy panel show boundaries. In 2004, ITV2 began airing The Xtra Factor, a companion to The X Factor, which ran for over a decade. The channel's big breakthrough came in 2008 with the launch of Celebrity Juice, a comedy panel show that became one of its longest-running hits. In 2010, The Only Way Is Essex premiered, defining the structured reality genre in the UK and spawning multiple spin-offs.

The revival of Love Island in 2015 transformed ITV2's fortunes. The show became a ratings juggernaut, with the 2019 finale attracting 3.6 million viewers. ITV2's audience share peaked at 2.5% of all UK television viewing in 2018, its 20th anniversary year. The COVID-19 pandemic forced cancellation of the 2020 summer series, but the channel recovered with the show's return in 2021. In 2022, ITV2's content moved to the new ITVX streaming platform, offering simulcasts and catch-up. The tenth series of Love Island aired in 2023 with new host Maya Jama.
