    About

The University of Iowa launched its athletic program in 1847, adopting the Hawkeyes moniker in 1862 to honor Chief Black Hawk. While the nickname eventually applied to all teams by the early 20th century, wrestling remains the undisputed historical cornerstone of the department. The squad has captured 24 NCAA national titles and 37 Big Ten championships, a record that defines the school's identity more than any other sport.

Kinnick Stadium serves as the football home base with a seating capacity exceeding 69,000. Fans pack the stands for every game, creating an environment often ranked among the toughest venues for visiting opponents. The basketball teams play their home games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where both men's and women's programs have reached the Final Four six times combined. Recent years saw the women's team advance to the championship round in 2023 and 2024, proving the program stays competitive on the national stage.

    History

Kirk Ferentz took over the football program in 1999 and has since become the longest-tenured head coach in FBS history. His tenure brought stability and multiple bowl victories, including wins in the Rose Bowl (1959), Cotton Bowl (1960), and Orange Bowl (1999). The team claimed consensus national championships in 1921, 1956, 1958, 1960, and 1999 while securing 12 Big Ten titles. The Cy-Hawk Series against Iowa State Cyclones remains one of the most heated rivalries in college sports, often deciding state pride.

Other notable figures include Lisa Bluder, who built the women's basketball program into a national powerhouse before her retirement, and Dan Gladden, an MLB All-Star outfielder. The university maintains membership in the Big Ten Conference since 1899, making it one of the longest-standing members. Facilities like Duane Banks Field for baseball support the diverse roster of 20 varsity teams competing across seven men's and thirteen women's squads.
