    About

Interscope Records launched in 1990 as a $20 million joint venture between producer Jimmy Iovine, film producer Ted Field, Atlantic Records, and Interscope Communications. The label's founding philosophy was radical: give A&R staff full autonomy and let artists and producers make their own creative decisions. Within a year, Interscope had its first hits and turned profitable by 1993.

A pivotal moment came in 1992 when Interscope inked a distribution deal with Death Row Records, the hardcore hip-hop label run by Suge Knight and Dr. Dre. That partnership put Interscope at the center of a national firestorm. Songs like "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" and "Gin and Juice" sold millions but drew intense political backlash. In 1995, Time Warner, then parent of Warner Music Group, sold its 50 percent stake back to Iovine and Field for $115 million after pressure from Bob Dole and William Bennett. The next year, MCA Inc. (later Universal Music Group) bought 50% of Interscope for $200 million.

Under Iovine's leadership, Interscope became a hip-hop powerhouse and a pop hit factory. The roster grew to include Eminem, Lady Gaga, No Doubt, Black Eyed Peas, and Kendrick Lamar. In 2014, John Janick took over as CEO and chairman, steering the label into the streaming era with Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and Juice WRLD. Today, Interscope operates as the flagship of Interscope Geffen A&M (IGA), a division of Universal Music Group, and consistently ranks among the top three US labels by market share.
