InFamous
"Power is a choice."
Overview
The inFAMOUS franchise centers on Conduits, humans with genetic mutations that grant them control over elemental forces. Players guide protagonists like Cole MacGrath and Delsin Rowe through open-world cities where they must decide whether to use their powers for good or evil. This moral compass shapes every aspect of the narrative, from dialogue options to the final outcome of the story.
Developed by Sucker Punch Productions, the series launched with the original game in 2009 before expanding to the PlayStation 4 with Second Son in 2014. The games are known for their fluid parkour traversal systems and unique combat mechanics that evolve based on player alignment. Each title explores the societal fear of superpowered individuals while delivering high-octane action sequences set against detailed urban backdrops.
Gameplay
Players traverse large city environments using parkour mechanics to scale buildings and move quickly across rooftops. Combat relies on a skill tree system that branches based on moral choices made throughout the game. Performing heroic acts unlocks defensive abilities and healing powers, while villainous actions grant access to aggressive attacks like lightning blasts or smoke-based melee strikes.
The sequel introduced a competitive multiplayer mode called Infected where one player controls a powerful Conduit hunting down survivors. Later entries expanded the power absorption mechanic, allowing characters to take on the abilities of defeated enemies such as fire, concrete manipulation, or graffiti projection. These powers change how players interact with the environment and solve puzzles.
Story
Cole MacGrath wakes up after a catastrophic explosion caused by a weapon known as the Dum-Dum Gun releases toxic gas into Empire City. Surviving the blast grants him electrical powers he must learn to control while navigating a quarantined zone filled with hostile factions. His journey forces him to choose between saving civilians or dominating the population to secure his own survival.
Delsin Rowe discovers his ability to absorb the powers of other Conduits while trying to protect his younger brother from the Department of External Affairs. Unlike Cole, Delsin operates in Seattle and uses his street artist background to navigate the conflict. The expansion First Light shifts focus to Abigail Walker, showing her struggle to control smoke-based powers before she joins the DEA to hunt Conduits.
