Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are a professional American football team based in Indianapolis, Indiana. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. Since 2008, the Colts have called Lucas Oil Stadium home, a state-of-the-art venue that replaced the RCA Dome, where the team played from 1984 to 2007. The franchise also serves as the host team for the NFL Scouting Combine, an annual showcase for college prospects, a role they have held since 1987.

The Colts' origins trace back to 1953 in Baltimore, Maryland, when Carroll Rosenbloom acquired the assets of the defunct Dallas Texans franchise, which had its roots in the Dayton Triangles, one of the NFL's founding teams. They were one of three NFL teams that joined the AFL teams to form the AFC after the 1970 merger. During their Baltimore years, the Colts made ten playoff appearances and won NFL Championships in 1958, 1959, and 1968. They also played in two Super Bowls in that era, losing to the New York Jets in Super Bowl III and defeating the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V.

The franchise relocated to Indianapolis in 1984, and since then, the Colts have been a consistent postseason presence, appearing in the playoffs eighteen times. They have captured two conference championships and reached two Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl XLI against the Chicago Bears and falling to the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV. The Colts began in Baltimore in 1953, inheriting the legacy of the Dayton Triangles. Under legendary coach Weeb Ewbank, they won back-to-back NFL titles in 1958 and 1959, with Johnny Unitas orchestrating the famous 'Greatest Game Ever Played' against the Giants. Don Shula took over in 1963 and led the team to another championship in 1968, but the Super Bowl III loss to the Jets remains a sore spot. The Colts redeemed themselves in Super Bowl V, edging the Cowboys 16-13 on Jim O'Brien's last-second field goal.

The move to Indianapolis in 1984, orchestrated by owner Robert Irsay, was controversial but revitalized the franchise. The RCA Dome years brought playoff appearances but little postseason success until Peyton Manning arrived in 1998. Manning transformed the team into a perennial contender, and under Tony Dungy, the Colts won Super Bowl XLI in 2007. After Manning's departure, Andrew Luck inherited the reins and led the team to the AFC Championship game in 2014, but his sudden retirement in 2019 sent the franchise into a rebuild.

Recent years have seen the team search for stability at quarterback, with the likes of Jacoby Brissett, Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz, and Matt Ryan all taking snaps. The 2023 hire of Shane Steichen brought hope, and the 2026 squad features Daniel Jones under center and a promising defense.
