The Indian Premier League, or IPL, is a professional Twenty20 cricket competition organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Launched in 2008, it quickly became the world's most commercially successful cricket league and one of the wealthiest sporting leagues globally. The tournament features franchise teams representing major Indian cities, with squads built through an annual player auction where both domestic and international stars are bought and sold. Matches are played in a fast-paced T20 format, each lasting about three hours, and the league runs from March to May every year.

The Supreme Court-appointed Mudgal Committee investigated and subsequently suspended Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for two seasons. In 2015, the Lodha Committee recommended sweeping reforms, including a two-year ban for CSK and RR, which was implemented.
