Chlöe Bailey had spent years harmonizing with her sister as one half of Chloe x Halle. But on In Pieces, released March 31, 2023, she stepped out alone. The debut solo album, released through Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records, arrived with a quiet confidence that felt earned. Chlöe co-wrote and executive produced every track, working with producers like Boi-1da, Jake One, and Fwdslxsh to build a sound that sits at the intersection of R&B, pop, and soul. The 13-track standard edition runs just over 33 minutes, a tight collection that never overstays its welcome.

The album's emotional core is its rawness. Written after a very public breakup, songs like "Pray It Away" and "Overwhelmed" lay bare feelings of doubt, anger, and eventual self-reclamation. The production is deliberately minimal, letting Chlöe's voice carry the weight. On "How Does It Feel," featuring Chris Brown, she shifts to a sultry, sparse groove. Missy Elliott appears on "Told Ya," bringing a burst of playful energy. Future joins on "Cheatback," a track that flips vulnerability into defiance. The title track, a one-and-a-half-minute interlude, ties the album together with a whispered reflection on brokenness and healing.

Critics were split but engaged. Metacritic scored it 65 out of 100, with NME giving it 4 out of 5 stars and calling it a bold, confident debut. Pitchfork landed at 6.2, praising her vocal command but noting the album's uneven lyrical depth. The Guardian gave it 3 stars, calling it promising but occasionally frustrating. First-week sales hit roughly 15,000 album-equivalent units in the US, landing at number 119 on the Billboard 200. It fared better on R&B charts, reaching number 7 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. No RIAA certification has been awarded as of mid-2024, and the album did not receive major award nominations.
