In My Feelings

Buried in the second half of Drake's double album Scorpion, released June 28, 2018, "In My Feelings" started as a deep cut and ended the summer as the biggest song in the country. The beat comes from producer TrapMoneyBenny, with Blaqnmild co-producing, and it loops Magnolia Shorty's 1990s New Orleans bounce track "Smoking Gun." City Girls show up with uncredited vocals, and their blunt interjection gives the hook its edge. Republic pushed it to rhythmic and contemporary hit radio on July 10, 2018, as the album's fifth single, and radio took it from there.

What separated this song from the rest of Scorpion was a dance. Comedian Shiggy posted an Instagram routine timed to the opening lines, and the Shiggy Challenge jumped from phones to arenas almost overnight. Athletes, celebrities, and regular people filmed their own versions, and the song's streaming numbers climbed with every upload. Drake shot the official video in New Orleans that August, bringing in Shiggy and a cameo from Phylicia Rashad, which gave the clip a hometown stamp the challenge alone couldn't provide.

Critics mostly enjoyed the lightness of it. The bounce rhythm and Drake's singsong delivery made for an easy, immediate listen, even if some reviewers saw it as slight next to the heavier material on the album. The numbers didn't care. Ten weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 tied the record for the longest-running rap chart-topper at the time, and the song picked up a Grammy for Best Rap Performance in 2019. It's the rare case where a meme and a radio hit built each other up instead of one carrying the other. [edit]
