    Overview

Youku released Immortal Samsara in the summer of 2022 as a continuous two-part xianxia drama, 59 episodes in total, running from July 20 to September 7. Yang Zi plays Yan Dan, a lotus fairy whose body functions as a living medicine chest, and Cheng Yi plays the reserved high immortal Lord Ying Yuan and, later, the mortal demon hunter Tang Zhou. The series adapts Su Mo's novel Agarwood Like Crumbs and was directed by Guo Hu and Ren Haitao.

The first part, 38 episodes, stays in the celestial court, where Yan Dan and her twin sister Zhi Xi navigate heavenly politics and Yan Dan's forbidden attachment to Ying Yuan. The second part, 21 episodes, jumps roughly eight centuries forward and follows Yan Dan through the mortal world alongside Yu Mo, a loyal companion, until she meets Tang Zhou, who carries a fragment of Ying Yuan's soul without knowing it. The shift from immortal drama to mortal quest gives the back half a different rhythm, trading court intrigue for demon hunting and artifact recovery.

English-language aggregators have largely passed on the show. IMDb records a rating near 6.1 from a few thousand votes, and Douban, the Chinese review site, placed it in the mid-5s to low-6s, which suggests a divided reception at home as well. The production values and the pairing of Yang Zi and Cheng Yi drew viewers; complaints centered on pacing and a crowded plot. It remains a common entry on Chinese fantasy drama recommendation lists, particularly for fans of the two leads.

Yan Dan and Zhi Xi are the last survivors of the Four-Leaved Lotus tribe, a lineage whose essence carries unusual restorative power. Yan Dan's body is itself a treasure, capable of healing and strengthening those who consume it, which makes her valuable to powerful figures and vulnerable to them. Under the Queen Mother's patronage the sisters take human form and enter the heavenly court. Yan Dan is mischievous and resistant to protocol; Ying Yuan is a high immortal of considerable standing, emotionally closed and bound by duty. Their attachment develops against the rules of the celestial order, and the first part follows that bond through its early warmth, its tests, and its eventual rupture, with rival suitors and court factions pressing from the sides. The Heavenly Emperor, the ambitious Huan Qin, and the loyal Pei Luo all have a hand in how the relationship unfolds, and not in Yan Dan's favor.

Roughly eight hundred years separate the two parts. Yan Dan has spent that time attempting to forget Ying Yuan. Yu Mo, a steady and persistent companion, draws her back into the world through a series of well-intentioned errands, and their travels bring her into contact with Tang Zhou, a demon hunter who does not know that a piece of Ying Yuan's soul resides in him. The second part braids a mortal-world quest, demon hunting, artifact recovery, sect rivalries, with the gradual return of memories that Yan Dan has tried to bury. Supporting figures including Zhi Xi, Xuan Xiang (also known as Liu Weiyang), and Zhao Lan remain entangled in the celestial and mortal power struggles that shape the lovers' path.

The series is structured as a star-crossed romance told in loops of reincarnation. Its recurring questions are whether love survives the erosion of memory and whether duty to the celestial order can be reconciled with personal attachment. Sword fights and court intrigue punctuate the romance, but the engine of the plot is the repeated separation and reunion of two people who keep finding each other across incarnations. The first part establishes the love and the forces that break it; the second part asks whether it can be rebuilt in a mortal key, with Tang Zhou as the uncertain vessel for Ying Yuan's return.
