About This Album
Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin returned with Imaginal Disk, a concept album released on August 23, 2024. The project follows True, a character who receives a compact disc-shaped implant in her forehead intended to construct her ideal self. Her body rejects the device, forcing her to navigate themes of consciousness and human rediscovery. The title draws from biology, referencing the sac-like structures inside insect larvae that develop into adult parts during metamorphosis.
The duo produced the record themselves, blending synth-pop, dance-pop, and electronic rock into a dense narrative experience. Four singles supported the release: "Death & Romance," "Image," "Tunnel Vision," and "That's My Floor." Critics immediately praised the work for its conceptual density and its ability to warp optimistic pop sounds into something darker. Paste magazine later ranked "Death & Romance" as the best song of 2024 and placed the album on multiple year-end lists.
A musical film serving as the visual backbone premiered at the Tribeca Festival in June 2026. Directed by Amanda Kramer, the film expanded the album's world into a bold, visually driven narrative. Magdalena Bay launched the Imaginal Mystery Tour in September 2024, an extensive run scheduled to conclude in August 2026. The album cracked the top 40 in Australia and appeared on secondary charts in the United Kingdom and the United States.
