About This Album
10cc's third studio album, released in March 1975 on Mercury Records, represents the band's most daring leap into studio-as-instrument territory. Recorded at their own Strawberry Studios in Stockport, the album saw Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley, and Lol Creme pushing their four-man operation to its limits. Every sound you hear, from the plucked cello strings on "The Film of My Love" to the cascading harmonies of the title track, came from the four of them, with Stewart and Gouldman handling engineering duties. The result is a record that feels both meticulously crafted and spontaneously playful, a tightrope walk between pop accessibility and avant-garde experimentation.
The album's nine tracks run a gamut of moods. There's the eight-minute mini-opera "Une Nuit à Paris," a three-part suite that shifts from cabaret to rock to lush balladry, telling a story of a one-night stand with a cynical twist. "Life Is a Minestrone" serves up a witty, food-themed commentary on modern life, while "Blackmail" and "The Second Sitting for the Last Supper" skewer relationships and religion with equal sharpness. Even the sillier moments, like "Brand New Day" with its layered vocal gibberish, feel purposeful, part of a band that never took itself too seriously but took the craft very seriously indeed.
Of course, the centerpiece is "I'm Not in Love," a song that took three weeks to build from a 16-track master tape of layered a cappella voices. The band sang the chord sequence note by note, creating a 48-voice choir that Eric Stewart then manipulated by wiping tape oxide with a razor blade to create the shimmering, breathing effect. The result was a #1 hit in the UK, Canada, and Ireland, and a #2 in the US, a song that became a wedding staple despite being about the impossibility of love. The album's success pushed 10cc into arenas worldwide, and it remains their definitive statement: a perfect collision of head and heart, studio wizardry and human warmth.
