Ikimono-gakari is a Japanese pop rock duo that has been active since 1999, currently consisting of vocalist Kiyoe Yoshioka and guitarist-songwriter Yoshiki Mizuno. Known for their uplifting, melody-driven songs and Yoshioka's powerful yet tender voice, the duo has sold millions of records in Japan. Their 2010 compilation Ikimonogakari: The Best sold over 1.5 million copies and became one of the best-selling albums of the year. They have achieved six consecutive number-one studio albums on Oricon and performed at the prestigious NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen ten times. Their music, often built around themes of gratitude, nature, and everyday life, has become a staple in anime, drama, and national events. Yoshiki Mizuno and Hotaka Yamashita first met in elementary school at age six and began playing music together. In February 1999, while still in high school, they decided to form a band. They posted a notice at their college seeking a vocalist, and Kiyoe Yoshioka, a fellow student, responded. She auditioned and joined in November 1999. The trio began performing live around Kanagawa and honing their sound. Their big break came when they won a local music competition, leading to a contract with Epic Records Japan. They made their major-label debut on March 15, 2006, with the single Sakura, a song Mizuno had written for a school project. The single charted modestly but built a loyal following. Their music has appeared in over 30 anime, drama, and film soundtracks, including Naruto Shippuden and Kuroko's Basketball, introducing them to younger audiences. The group's name was suggested by a friend who remembered the elementary school role of ikimono-gakari. Mizuno and Yamashita had been classmates since age six. Yoshioka was recruited after Mizuno and Yamashita posted a vocalist-wanted ad at their college. Sakura was originally a school project song. The group has performed at Kohaku Uta Gassen ten times. Mizuno has written songs for Arashi and SMAP. Yoshioka's vocal technique includes a distinctive whisper-to-belt style. Their music has been used in over 30 soundtracks.
