About This Song
The opening seconds of IDGAF are all palm-muted guitar and a drum line that lands like a boot heel. Dua Lipa recorded the track for her self-titled debut, and Warner Bros. issued it as a single on 12 January 2018. By then her previous single, New Rules, was still lodged in charts around the world, and this one picked up the story where that video left off: same ex, same refusal, less patience.
Lipa wrote the song with MNEK, Larzz Principato, Skyler Stonestreet, and Whiskey Water; Koz produced it. The title spells out a phrase the lyric never softens. Over a marching beat and a clipped guitar figure, Lipa sings to a former boyfriend who has convinced himself he can come back. Her vocal stays flat and conversational, which makes the dismissal land harder than a shout would. It sits in the dance-pop and futurepop lanes of the debut, with enough R&B in the delivery to keep it from sounding like a straight club record.
The single cracked the top 10 in 20 territories. It hit number one in Croatia and Ireland and number three in the UK, and the certification run followed: triple platinum in the UK, quadruple platinum in Australia, six-times platinum in Canada, double platinum in Italy, Norway, and the United States. Henry Scholfield directed the video, which puts two versions of Lipa, one heartsick and one unbothered, at the head of rival dance crews. The clip drew a Best Choreography nomination at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards, and the song earned a British Single of the Year nod at the 2019 Brits.
