About
IDEMIA is a French multinational technology corporation that specializes in augmented identity and biometric security. Headquartered in Courbevoie, France, the company designs and deploys systems that secure both physical and digital identities for billions of people. Its technology powers e-passports for over 100 countries, biometric scanners at major airports like Singapore Changi and Dubai International, and payment cards for leading banks worldwide. With around 15,000 employees and estimated annual revenue of €3 billion, IDEMIA operates through three primary segments: Public Security & Identity, Financial Institutions, and Telecom & Access.
The company was formed through a 2016 acquisition of Safran Identity & Security by private equity firm Advent International, which merged it with Oberthur Technologies, a smart card and security printing firm with roots dating back to 1835. After rebranding as OT-Morpho, the entity adopted the name IDEMIA in 2017, a portmanteau of identity and media. Today, IDEMIA holds a dominant position in the global identity market, processing over 3 billion secure transactions annually. Its facial recognition algorithms consistently rank in the top tier of NIST evaluations, and the company has been named a Top 100 Global Innovator by Clarivate from 2019 to 2023.
IDEMIA's work has not been without controversy. A 2019 MIT Media Lab study found higher error rates in some of its algorithms for people with darker skin tones, prompting calls for fairness improvements. The company's technology has also been used in government surveillance systems that raised privacy concerns, including France's national identity database INES. In 2022, a ransomware attack exposed some customer data, though IDEMIA stated no core biometric databases were compromised. In 2024, the company announced a strategic split into two independent entities: IDEMIA Public Security and IDEMIA Secure Transactions, positioning for future growth.
Mission
IDEMIA's mission is to make the world a safer place by securing physical and digital identities for everyone. The company focuses on augmented identity, the convergence of biometrics, cryptography, and secure hardware, to enable trusted interactions in border control, law enforcement, banking, mobile payments, access control, and telecommunications. By providing end-to-end identity solutions, IDEMIA aims to protect individuals, businesses, and governments while ensuring privacy and data security.
History
The roots of IDEMIA stretch back to 1835, when François-Charles Oberthur founded a printing and card company in Rennes, France. That business evolved into Oberthur Technologies, a leading smart card manufacturer. Meanwhile, in 1982, the biometrics division of Safran, known as Morpho, began developing fingerprint recognition systems. For decades, these two companies operated independently, with Oberthur focusing on secure documents and Morpho on biometrics.
The modern IDEMIA took shape in 2016, when private equity firm Advent International acquired Safran Identity & Security for €2.4 billion and merged it with Oberthur Technologies. The combined entity was initially called OT-Morpho before rebranding to IDEMIA in 2017. Under CEO Yves Portalier, the company expanded its global footprint, acquiring Vision-Box, a Portuguese airport biometrics firm, in 2020. In 2023, Pierre Barrial became CEO and launched a strategic restructuring, splitting the company into IDEMIA Public Security and IDEMIA Secure Transactions in 2024. That same year, IDEMIA began piloting a digital identity wallet for the European Union's eIDAS framework, signaling a push into decentralized identity.
