Most publishers chase the mainstream, but Ichijinsha built an empire by doubling down on the genres others ignored. Starting in August 1992 as Studio DNA, this outfit began by editing shōnen manga before pivoting sharply toward shōjo and specialized fiction. The company went public in January 1998 to handle full-scale publishing operations. A major turning point arrived in December 2001 with the launch of Issaisha and its flagship magazine Monthly Comic Zero Sum, which quickly became a cornerstone for shōjo readers looking for specific storytelling styles.

The brand identity solidified three years later when Studio DNA and Issaisha merged under the Ichijinsha name. This consolidation allowed them to dominate the Boys' Love (BL) and Yuri markets alongside heavy hitters like Kadokawa. Their strategy relies heavily on cross-media adaptations, frequently seeing their serialized manga transform into anime series. Recent activity shows they are still very active; titles like Though I Am an Inept Villainess entered their final arc in 2026, while new anime projects such as Does It Count If You Lose Your Virginity to an Android? prepared for a January 2026 premiere.

Financial independence took a hit in October 2016 when Kodansha acquired the company, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. Despite the change in ownership structure, Ichijinsha kept its editorial voice intact, continuing to produce content that appeals to LGBTQ+ audiences and fantasy light novel fans globally.
