About This Album
Cutting Crew's debut album, released in 1986, is best known for its colossal lead single, but the full record reveals a band with broader ambitions. The four-piece English group, formed in 1985 by singer Nick Van Eede and guitarist Kevin MacMichael, set out to craft a polished pop-rock sound that could fill arenas. Working with producers Terry Brown, John Jansen, and Steve Lillywhite, they recorded at London's Town House and Nomis Studios, with additional sessions at AIR Studios in Montserrat. The result is a ten-track collection that shifts between synth-driven ballads and harder-edged rock, held together by Van Eede's distinctive tenor and MacMichael's crisp guitar work.
The album reached number 16 on the UK Albums Chart and number 52 on the Billboard 200, driven largely by the success of its title track. That song, produced by Lillywhite, became an international smash, hitting number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two in the UK. Three further singles followed: "I've Been in Love Before," which reached number 24 in the US; "One for the Mockingbird," which peaked at number 38; and "Any Colour," which failed to chart in either market. The album itself sold steadily, earning gold certifications in the UK, US, and Canada.
Critical response at the time was divided. Billboard praised the album as "a potent, well-crafted set of pop/rock songs," while AllMusic later dismissed it as "a textbook example of mid-80s corporate rock." The band's sound drew comparisons to The Police and John Waite, though the production, heavy on synthesizers and reverb, was very much of its moment. In 2016, Cherry Red Records issued a remastered edition with bonus tracks, including B-sides and remixes, giving the album a second life for collectors.
