I Heart Huckabees, styled as i ♥ huckabees, is a 2004 philosophical comedy-drama directed by David O. Russell from a script he co-wrote with Jeff Baena. The film follows a pair of existential detectives, played by Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin, who are hired by clients including Jason Schwartzman, Jude Law, and Mark Wahlberg to investigate the meaning of their lives. As the investigations overlap, a rival detective, Isabelle Huppert, tries to pull the clients into her own nihilistic worldview. The film also stars Naomi Watts. Produced by Scott Rudin Productions, it had a budget of around $20 million and grossed about $18 million worldwide. A self-described "existential comedy," it received mixed reviews but has gained a cult following for its quirky take on philosophy and consumerism.

Albert Markovski leads the Open Spaces Coalition, a small environmental group fighting to preserve a marshland from development by Huckabees, a massive retail corporation. Albert is troubled by a recurring coincidence: he keeps seeing the same tall African man in different places. Obsessed with finding meaning in this pattern, he hires Bernard and Vivian Jaffe, a married couple who run an existential detective agency. The Jaffes believe in the interconnectedness of all things and use unconventional methods, such as having clients sit in a blanket fort and meditate on a ball, to help them find answers.
Brad Stand, a slick Huckabees executive, has infiltrated Albert's group to further the corporation's agenda. Brad appears successful and happy, with a perfect girlfriend, Dawn Campbell, who is the bubbly spokesperson for Huckabees. But Brad feels empty inside and secretly hires the Jaffes as well. The Jaffes assign Albert a case buddy: Tommy Corn, a firefighter obsessed with petroleum dependency who wears a bicycle helmet everywhere because he believes the world is ending. Tommy and Albert bond over their shared existential crises.
As the Jaffes probe deeper, they discover Brad's corporate manipulation, creating tension. Meanwhile, a rival detective, Caterine Vauban, a nihilistic French philosopher who believes everything is meaningless, enters the picture. She begins to pull Albert and Tommy into her worldview, sparking a philosophical battle between the Jaffes' optimism and Caterine's bleakness. The central conflict revolves around Albert's search for meaning, Brad's attempt to maintain his facade, Tommy's desperate hope, and the clash of philosophies, all converging on the Huckabees development project.
Critical Consensus
An ambitious, quirky existential comedy that aims high with its philosophical themes, but its eccentric style and uneven tone divide audiences. Some find it brilliantly original, while others find it pretentious and chaotic.

“Mr. Russell has made a film that is, in its own way, as sincere and earnest as it is smart and funny. It's a philosophical comedy that actually takes its ideas seriously.”
A.O. Scott
The New York Times
“Russell's film is a mess, but a glorious, ambitious, funny mess that dares to ask the big questions. You have to admire its chutzpah even when it falls on its face.”
Peter Travers
Rolling Stone
“A wildly uneven but often inspired existential comedy that will delight some and exasperate others. The cast is uniformly excellent, but the film's reach exceeds its grasp.”
