I Follow Rivers

Swedish singer Lykke Li released "I Follow Rivers" on February 14, 2011, as the third single from her second album Wounded Rhymes. The track was written by Li and produced by Björn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John. It blends indie pop with gothic rock, driven by a hypnotic, percussive beat and Li's intense, emotive vocals. Lyrically, it's about devotion and longing, with a repetitive, almost mantra-like chorus that builds tension.

The original album version runs 4 minutes 48 seconds and charted modestly in Sweden at number 24 and in Belgium at number 7. But the song exploded thanks to a remix by Belgian DJ The Magician (Stephen Fasano), released in 2012. That remix reworked the track into a smooth, retro house anthem, topping charts in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland. It reached number 3 in France, number 9 in the UK and Denmark, and number 14 on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. The remix alone has over 500 million Spotify streams as of 2025.

Critical reception praised the original's haunting minimalism. Pitchfork called it a "stomping, clattering anthem" with "primal urgency." NME described it as "a brooding, beautiful slice of Scandinavian pop." The Magician's remix earned a Rolling Stone nod for its "discofied groove." The song was nominated for Best Song at Sweden's Grammis Awards and Best Video at the P3 Guld Awards. The Belgian rock band Triggerfinger covered it live on radio in 2012, and their version topped the charts in Belgium and the Netherlands, earning Platinum in Belgium and Gold in the Netherlands. Other covers came from Caliban, Mélanie Pain, and The 1975. The song appeared in the film The Connection (2014) and TV's Grey's Anatomy.[edit]
