Hyundai Rotem
South Korea"Speed, steel, and the machines that move nations"
About
Hyundai Rotem started life on July 1, 1999, when the rolling stock divisions of Hyundai Precision, Hanjin Heavy Industries, and Daewoo Heavy Industries were folded into one company. That origin explains a lot about the firm today. It inherited rail engineering from three different corporate cultures, plus Hyundai Precision's earlier defense work, and it landed inside Hyundai Motor Group, where it still sits as an affiliate. The headquarters are in Uiwang, just south of Seoul, and the heavy manufacturing happens in Changwon.
Three business groups carry the load. Railway builds high-speed trainsets, electric multiple units, light rail vehicles, and signaling systems, with deliveries in roughly 40 countries and projects logged in more than 50. Defence is where the headlines come from: Hyundai Rotem is South Korea's only manufacturer of a main battle tank, turning out the K2 Black Panther and the K808 armored personnel carrier. Plant and Machinery Systems builds automotive production lines and factory equipment, a quieter business that traces directly back to the group's car-making roots.
The rail side keeps pushing on hydrogen. Official materials talk up steam methane reformers and refueling stations, and the company has shown a 400 km/h high-speed concept along with hydrogen-powered rail designs. That is a bet on where procurement money goes next, not just a showpiece. On defense, the October 2026 agreement to buy Hyundai Wia's defense business for 358.4 billion won, about $262 million, consolidates the group's weapons exports under one roof. The same stretch brought a KRW 239 billion supply contract in Taiwan and a NOK 700 million deal with Kongsberg to arm Poland's K2 tanks.
Being listed on the Korea Exchange under 064350 means outside shareholders share the ride. Mirae Asset Securities set a 160,000 won price target in October 2026, and that month an earnings miss knocked shares down about 10 percent. The dual rail-and-defense profile smooths revenue compared with a pure rail firm, but it also hooks the company to defense budget cycles and the long, slow timelines of transit procurement.
