The film opens on the windswept isle of Berk, a Viking outpost where life is a constant struggle against dragon raids. For generations, the people of Berk have been taught that dragons are mindless, destructive beasts that must be killed on sight. This belief is the cornerstone of their culture, and their chieftain, the formidable Stoick the Vast, leads by example. Stoick is a man of action and tradition, and he desperately wants his son, Hiccup, to follow in his footsteps. However, Hiccup is a scrawny, inventive, and thoughtful teenager who is more comfortable tinkering with his blacksmith creations than wielding an axe. He is an outsider in his own village, a constant source of frustration for his father and ridicule from his peers.

The central conflict is ignited when a Night Fury, the most elusive and dangerous dragon species of all, is shot down by Hiccup's experimental bola launcher during a dragon raid. Hiccup tracks the wounded dragon into the forest and finds himself face-to-face with the creature. Unable to kill it, he instead cuts it free and sets it loose. The training is brutal, led by the village blacksmith, Gobber the Belch, a wise and grizzled veteran who lost a limb to a dragon.

Hiccup's life changes when he returns to the forest and discovers the Night Fury, which he names Toothless, is trapped in a cove. Realizing the dragon is just as scared and injured as he is, Hiccup begins a tentative friendship. Through a series of careful, awkward, and occasionally hilarious encounters, he learns that Toothless is not a monster but a highly intelligent, playful, and loyal creature. He even develops a secret weapon that can knock out a dragon without killing it. As Hiccup excels in training, his father, Stoick, becomes proud of him, believing his son has finally become a true Viking. The pressure builds as Stoick announces that Hiccup, as the top trainee, will be the one to kill a dragon in the final rite of passage. Hiccup is caught in an impossible dilemma: he must maintain his ruse to gain his father's respect but cannot betray the friend who has shown him the truth.
