Houston Rockets

The Houston Rockets are a professional basketball team based in Houston, Texas, competing in the NBA's Western Conference Southwest Division. Founded in 1967 as the San Diego Rockets, the franchise moved to Houston in 1971. The team plays at the Toyota Center in downtown Houston. The Rockets have won two NBA championships (1994, 1995) and four Western Conference titles. Their early years were tough, winning just 15 games in their debut. But the 1968 draft brought Elvin Hayes, who led them to their first playoff appearance. After a decade of struggles, the 1976 trade for Moses Malone changed everything, pushing Houston to the 1981 NBA Finals, where they lost to the Boston Celtics. The 1984 draft brought Hakeem Olajuwon, who, alongside Ralph Sampson, formed the "Twin Towers" and led the team to the 1986 Finals, again falling to Boston. The breakthrough came under coach Rudy Tomjanovich, with Olajuwon guiding the Rockets to back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995, the latter with Clyde Drexler. Later stars included Charles Barkley, Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming, and James Harden, who won MVP in 2018. The Houston Rockets originated in San Diego, awarded as an expansion franchise on January 11, 1967, and began play in the 1967-68 season as the San Diego Rockets. The name was chosen via a fan contest, reflecting San Diego's aerospace industry. The team struggled initially, posting a 15-67 record in its first season, but the acquisition of Elvin Hayes with the first overall pick in the 1968 draft brought immediate success. Hayes led the Rockets to their first playoff appearance in 1969, though they lost to the Atlanta Hawks in the Western Division Semifinals.

In 1971, the franchise relocated to Houston after being purchased by Texas Sports Investments, Incorporated. The name Rockets was retained, fitting Houston's identity as home to NASA's Johnson Space Center. The early Houston years were inconsistent, but the arrival of Moses Malone in 1976 transformed the team. Malone, acquired from the Buffalo Braves, won three MVP awards in his six seasons with the Rockets and led the team to the 1981 NBA Finals, where they fell to the Boston Celtics in six games.

The 1984 NBA Draft brought Hakeem Olajuwon as the first overall pick. Alongside Ralph Sampson, the Rockets reached the 1986 NBA Finals, again losing to the Celtics. After a few lean years, Rudy Tomjanovich took over as head coach in 1992. Under his leadership, Olajuwon led the Rockets to back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995. The 1994 title came after a seven-game Finals victory over the New York Knicks, with Olajuwon winning Finals MVP. In 1995, the Rockets, seeded sixth in the West, defeated the Orlando Magic in a sweep, becoming the lowest-seeded team to win an NBA championship. Clyde Drexler, acquired mid-season, joined Olajuwon to form a formidable duo.

Following the championship era, the Rockets saw stars like Charles Barkley, Scottie Pippen, and later Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming. The Yao-McGrady pairing from 2004 to 2008 produced strong regular-season records but no deep playoff runs. Yao's career was cut short by injuries. In 2012, the Rockets acquired James Harden from the Oklahoma City Thunder. Harden blossomed into an MVP-caliber player, winning the award in 2018 and leading the league in scoring multiple times. Under general manager Daryl Morey, the team embraced an analytical, three-point-heavy offense. The Rockets reached the Western Conference Finals in 2015 and 2018, losing to the Golden State Warriors both times. After Harden's trade in 2021, the team entered a rebuilding phase, drafting Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun. In 2023, the Rockets hired Ime Udoka as head coach, and the team improved to 41-41 in 2023-24 and 52-30 in 2024-25, though they lost in the first round of the playoffs both seasons. [edit]
