    Overview

"House of M" is an eight-issue comic book limited series from Marvel Comics that really made waves back in 2005. Written by Brian Michael Bendis, with stunning art by Olivier Coipel, it picks up right after the events of "Avengers Disassembled" and "Excalibur (vol. 3)". The whole story kicks off when the Scarlet Witch, a powerful mutant with a very fragile grip on reality, is manipulated by her twin brother Quicksilver and their father Magneto. When the heroes of Earth-616 try to intervene, Wanda Maximoff unleashes her immense power, fundamentally altering the fabric of reality itself.

Suddenly, the world is a place where mutants are the dominant species, and Magneto's family is at the absolute pinnacle of power. This new world, known as Earth-58163, temporarily replaces the familiar Marvel Universe. Most of the heroes are living out idyllic lives, unaware of their former existences. However, some, like Wolverine, retain their memories and begin to notice that something is terribly wrong. This sets in motion a desperate struggle to remember their true lives and restore the original timeline, culminating in a shocking and profoundly impactful climax that forever changes the landscape for mutants in the Marvel Universe.

The series explored some heavy themes, like the nature of reality, the consequences of wielding immense power, what it means to have an identity, and the deep-seated struggle for equality, especially concerning mutants. It's often seen as an allegory for how a minority group's defining characteristics can be stripped away. The fallout from "House of M" was huge, leading directly into the "Decimation" era and the infamous "No More Mutants" status quo, which drastically reduced the mutant population. It’s a story that really defined a generation of Marvel comics.
