About
Hoka was born in the French Alps in 2009, the brainchild of two trail running obsessives, Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard, who wanted to build a shoe that let you bomb down mountains without destroying your legs. They were working at Salomon at the time, and their first prototype, the Mafate, looked like a marshmallow on a sole, a massive, oversized midsole that everyone in the industry thought was a joke. That chunky silhouette became the signature of the "maximalist" movement, a direct middle finger to the minimalist barefoot trend that was all the rage back then. Runners quickly discovered that all that cushioning actually worked: it absorbed shock, smoothed out rough terrain, and let you run farther with less fatigue. By 2012, Deckers Brands, the parent company of UGG, scooped up Hoka for just over a million dollars, a steal in hindsight. Under Deckers, Hoka moved its operational base to Goleta, California, but kept its design soul in Annecy, France.
For years, Hoka was a cult brand beloved by ultramarathoners and trail runners who appreciated the absurdly plush ride. Then something clicked around 2018. The distinctive, bulbous silhouette started showing up on city streets, on college campuses, and in fashion editorials. Suddenly, the same shoe that helped Courtney Dauwalter win 100-mile races became a lifestyle staple. Hoka leaned into this crossover with lifestyle models like the Transport and the Ora Recovery Slide, while continuing to innovate in performance running with the Clifton, Bondi, and Speedgoat lines. The brand's signature technologies, Meta-Rocker geometry for a smooth heel-to-toe transition, Profly foam for responsive cushioning, and Vibram Megagrip outsoles on trail shoes, became hallmarks of the Hoka experience. Apparel followed in 2022, and in 2024, Hoka launched its first golf shoe, proving the brand's design philosophy works beyond running.
Today, Hoka is the fastest-growing major athletic footwear brand, generating $1.8 billion in revenue in fiscal 2024, a 34% jump from the year before. That makes up nearly half of Deckers' total revenue. The brand commands the highest average selling price among running shoe companies, around $145 per pair, and holds a dominant 65% share of the maximalist segment. With a global presence across 60 countries, 3,500 retail doors, and a booming direct-to-consumer business that accounts for 35% of sales, Hoka has gone from a niche alpine startup to a powerhouse that rivals Nike and Brooks. And it all started with two guys in France who thought running shoes should be more fun.
