Hitman 3 drops players into the polished shoes of Agent 47 for the final chapter of the World of Assassination trilogy. Developed and self-published by IO Interactive after the studio gained independence, this 2021 stealth game concludes the story that began with 2016's Hitman. Players guide the genetically engineered assassin and his allies as they dismantle Providence, the shadowy cabal that shaped 47's past and controls global events. The core gameplay remains familiar: six sandbox levels offer multiple paths, disguises, and creative kill opportunities. But IO Interactive pushed for a more story-driven experience, resulting in a darker tone and experimental mission designs. The Dartmoor level, for instance, frames an assassination as a murder mystery, letting players gather clues and accuse the wrong person before eliminating the real target. Inspired by immersive sims, the game encourages environmental interaction, branching narratives, and emergent solutions.

The base game features six locations: Dubai, Dartmoor, Berlin, Chongqing, Mendoza, and the Carpathian Mountains in Romania. A post-launch update added a fictional island in the Andaman Sea. Initially released on January 20, 2021, for Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Stadia, and Nintendo Switch (via cloud), it later arrived on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Critics praised its level design, stealth mechanics, and atmosphere, with some calling it the series' best entry and one of the greatest stealth games ever. Commercially, it was the most successful Hitman title. In January 2023, IO rebranded it as Hitman: World of Assassination, merging it with content from the previous two games into a live-service model. A VR edition, Hitman 3 VR: Reloaded, launched for Meta Quest 3 in September 2024 and PlayStation VR2 in March 2025.[edit]

Agent 47 returns to a familiar loop: infiltrate a space, study routines, don disguises, and eliminate targets with style. The six sandbox levels are dense with opportunities. In Dubai, you might drop a chandelier on a target or sabotage a parachute. Berlin turns the tables: targets hunt you instead. The game rewards patience and experimentation. A new camera tool lets you scan for clues and hack terminals. The Glacier engine, upgraded for this entry, delivers ray tracing on PC and next-gen consoles, with 4K at 60 fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Load times are nearly instant.

Post-launch content expanded the game significantly. The Seven Deadly Sins DLC added themed escalations and items. The Year 2 update brought ray tracing, the Ambrose Island map, and Freelancer mode. Freelancer, added in January 2023, is a roguelike campaign: you manage a safehouse, take on randomized contracts, and lose gear on failure. It strips away the safety net and forces adaptability, extending replayability far beyond the story.[edit]

Agent 47 and Diana Burnwood target the Partners of Providence, the secret society that has manipulated world events and shaped 47's origins. The narrative takes a personal turn, directly concluding the arcs of 47 and his ally Lucas Grey. Each mission advances the plan: Dubai to steal intel, Dartmoor to eliminate a Partner, Berlin to survive an ambush, Chongqing to destroy data, Mendoza to confront the final Partners, and finally a linear train sequence in the Carpathian Mountains. That last mission breaks the sandbox formula deliberately, offering a tense, story-driven climax. A post-launch update added Ambrose Island, a side story involving a rogue Providence faction.[edit]
