He has won multiple Game of the Year awards and was inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2020, he received lifetime achievement awards from four major industry organizations, a rare honor. He was listed in TIME's 100 Most Influential People in 2020 and has been ranked the #1 video game director by IGN. In 2023, the Japanese government awarded him the Order of the Rising Sun for his contributions to culture and industry.
