    About

Founded in 1875 by Irish immigrants in the Leith district of Edinburgh, Hibernian Football Club carved out a unique identity from its very first day. The name comes from Hibernia, the Latin word for Ireland, and the club has kept that heritage alive through green and white stripes ever since. They moved into their current home at Easter Road in 1893, a ground that now seats 20,421 fans and remains one of the most atmospheric venues in Scotland.

The team joined the inaugural Scottish Football League in 1890 and has spent most of its history fighting at the top end of the table. Their trophy cabinet includes six league titles, with the last one coming in the 1951–52 season. Domestic cup success is also part of the fabric here, featuring four Scottish Cup wins in 1902, 1907, 1956, and 1998, plus five League Cups won between 1972 and 2016.

European nights provided some of the club's most memorable moments, especially when they reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1969. That run ended against eventual champions Milan, but the journey cemented Hibs as a force on the continent. Recent years have seen the squad return to prominence, with a dramatic 2–1 victory over city rivals Hearts in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final on November 1, 2026, setting up a final clash against Rangers.

    History

The club emerged in 1875 when members of the local Irish community decided to form a team that reflected their background. They quickly became a founding member of the Scottish Football League in 1890, a milestone that placed them among the pioneers of professional soccer in Scotland. Early success came in the form of domestic cups, with the first major silverware arriving in the late 19th century.

Post-war decades saw the team reach new heights, highlighted by the 1951–52 league title win and a strong European campaign in 1969. The 1990s brought renewed hope with Scottish Cup victories in 1998, while the 2000s and 2010s produced multiple League Cup triumphs. The rivalry with Heart of Midlothian, known as the Edinburgh Derby, remains the defining fixture of the calendar, often deciding the mood of the entire season.

Recent developments show a club adapting to modern demands while honoring its roots. New signings like Colton Swan arrived from the USL Championship after the 2026 season, signaling an intent to build a competitive squad. The path to the 2026–27 Premier Sports Cup Final against Rangers marked a significant step forward for the management under Pat Fenlon.
