About This Song
Tom Higgenson wrote this song after meeting Delilah DiCrescenzo, a former Rolling Stone editor and future professional surfer, during a project in New York City. Although the pair never met face-to-face, their correspondence via letters and emails inspired lyrics about longing for someone far away. The track originally appeared on the band's 2005 EP All That We Needed before re-recording it for their 2006 album Every Second Counts.
The production strips away the polished sheen of mid-2000s radio hits to focus on a simple acoustic guitar riff and Higgenson's earnest vocals. Subtle string arrangements swell in the background to heighten the emotional weight without overpowering the intimate atmosphere. This approach stood out sharply against the nu-metal and high-energy pop dominating airwaves at the time.
In July 2026, the band released a new version featuring Australian singer-songwriter LØLØ, marking the first time the "voice" of Delilah appears in the track. This update coincided with news that the real Delilah DiCrescenzo had finally responded to the song 21 years after its release. The collaboration was promoted through performances on NBC's TODAY show later that year.
