Heavy D. & the Boyz were among the first rap groups to achieve mainstream crossover success, winning an American Music Award and multiple Soul Train Awards. Their album Big Tyme was the first rap album to go platinum without a Top 10 pop single, a remarkable feat in the late 1980s. The group's biggest hit, "Now That We Found Love," set a record as the longest-charting rap single on the Billboard Hot 100 at the time, spending 26 weeks on the chart. Heavy D was posthumously inducted into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame in 2012 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The group's influence on the new jack swing sound and their role in expanding hip-hop's audience remain widely recognized.
