Havaianas

Havaianas, the Brazilian flip-flop brand, has become a global symbol of casual comfort since its debut in 1962. Created by the São Paulo-based manufacturer Alpargatas S.A., the sandals were inspired by the hybrid Hawaiian and Japanese zori styles popular in Hawaii. While often credited as the first mass-produced rubber flip-flops, that distinction actually belongs to Hawaiian manufacturers from the late 1920s or early 1930s, where the Havaianas creators likely drew their inspiration. The name itself is the feminine plural of "Hawaiians" in Portuguese, a nod to the beaches where the original rubber sandals gained fame.

Havaianas are instantly recognizable by their design: a Greek key pattern along the straps, a rice-grain texture on the insole, and a flat, brick-like tread on the outsole. Over the decades, they've evolved from humble beachwear to a cultural icon, representing Brazil's laid-back, sun-soaked lifestyle. The brand's marketing has featured celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and surfer Kelly Slater, and the sandals have appeared on haute couture runways for designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Saint Laurent, and Dion Lee.

Today, Havaianas dominates the Brazilian rubber sandal market with an 80% share, and sells roughly 200 million pairs annually across more than 100 countries.
