According to her official backstory, Miku is a 16-year-old singing android from a not-so-distant future where music had been lost. She emerged to reintroduce melody and song to the world. Her voice was synthesized from samples provided by Japanese voice actress and singer Saki Fujita, using Yamaha's Vocaloid 2 engine. The name Hatsune Miku combines the Japanese words for "first" (hatsu), "sound" (ne), and "future" (miku), translating to "the first sound of the future." The number 01 on her left shoulder in official artwork references her position as the first in the series, as well as the Yamaha DX-7 synthesizer, a hugely influential digital synth from the 1980s.
