Harvey Dent

Harvey Dent started out as Gotham City's dedicated district attorney in the 1940s. He built a reputation for taking on organized crime with real passion and skill. A close friend of Bruce Wayne, he formed an important partnership with Batman and Commissioner Gordon to clean up the city.

His life changed forever during a trial when gangster Boss Maroni threw acid at him, leaving the left side of his face horribly scarred. The trauma brought out a second personality that had been buried since childhood. He took the name Two-Face and began letting a scarred silver dollar decide every major choice in his life. [edit]

Before the accident Harvey came across as idealistic, charismatic, and deeply committed to justice. He believed the law could fix Gotham and worked tirelessly to make that happen. People saw him as the city's white knight, a symbol of hope in a corrupt world.

After his transformation the noble Harvey side still surfaces, but it battles constantly with the vengeful, chaotic Two-Face personality. Two-Face is ruthless, angry, and obsessed with chance as the only fair way to make decisions. He flips his coin for everything from small choices to life-and-death calls. Harvey begins as one of Batman's strongest allies against crime. In stories like The Long Halloween he works closely with Batman and Gordon until the acid attack shatters him. From that point he swings between trying to find redemption and giving in completely to his darker impulses.

In The Dark Knight the Joker targets him specifically, kidnapping both Harvey and his fiancée Rachel Dawes. Rachel dies in the explosion while Harvey survives but with terrible burns. The loss pushes him over the edge. He becomes a vigilante killer targeting everyone he blames for her death, including Gordon's family. Batman stops him in a final confrontation on the rooftop, and Harvey falls to his death. Batman then takes the blame for Harvey's crimes to preserve the district attorney's legacy as a hero.[edit]
