Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Overview
Electronic Arts released an action-adventure title in November 2002 that adapted J. K. Rowling's second novel and the concurrent film directed by Chris Columbus. The project launched on November 5, 2002, timed to coincide with the movie's theatrical premiere across a wide range of hardware including Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation, Mac OS, Game Boy Advance, and Game Boy Color.
Different studios built each version to fit specific hardware, resulting in distinct experiences for players. KnowWonder developed the primary console and PC versions which utilize a third-person perspective where players control Harry directly. Griptonite Games handled the Game Boy Advance port while Eurocom created the Game Boy Color version, both shifting to side-scrolling mechanics due to hardware limitations.
Gameplay
Players explore Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Hagrid's hut, and the Forbidden Forest while solving puzzles and battling enemies like spiders, ghosts, and dementors. The core console and PC versions feature a magic system where spellcasting is tied to button combinations or timing-based inputs for spells such as Expelliarmus, Stupefy, and Lumos. Users can ride broomsticks for aerial exploration and mini-games while interacting with characters like Dobby, Lucius Malfoy, and Argus Filch.
The portable versions offered divergent experiences with side-scrolling mechanics similar to classic 2D platformers. These titles focused on puzzle-solving and simplified combat sequences, featuring unique levels not present in the console games such as exploring the Quidditch pitch in a different format or specific dungeon crawls designed for smaller screens.
Story
Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts for his second year only to find the school under threat from a mysterious monster that petrifies students. As rumors swirl that the Heir of Salazar Slytherin has opened the legendary Chamber of Secrets, Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger must investigate the attacks. Key plot points included in the gameplay are the discovery of the diary of Tom Riddle, the rescue of Ginny Weasley from the Chamber itself, and the confrontation with the Basilisk.
