Harper's Bazaar
United States"The world's oldest continuously published women's fashion magazine"
About
On November 2, 1867, a new weekly called Harper's Bazar hit New York City newsstands, the first US magazine devoted entirely to women's fashion. Published by Harper & Brothers, it featured engravings of the latest Parisian styles alongside serialized fiction. The magazine officially changed its name to Harper's Bazaar in 1930, though the first issue with the new spelling appeared a year earlier. Hearst Communications bought the title in 1913 and has run it ever since from the Hearst Tower at 300 West 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan.
What set Harper's Bazaar apart from the start was its marriage of high fashion and serious literature. Early issues carried work by Henry James and Edith Wharton. Later, editor Diana Vreeland, who led the magazine from 1936 to 1962, turned its pages into a visual playground. She commissioned Richard Avedon to shoot models leaping through Paris streets, a style that redefined fashion photography. The magazine's covers became cultural artifacts, from the iconic 1965 Jean Shrimpton portrait to the 1990s supermodel era.
Today, Harper's Bazaar publishes over 30 international editions and reaches millions through its website and social channels. The brand has expanded into video content, a shoppable marketplace, and annual events like the Bazaar Summit. Its editorial voice remains aspirational but sharp, covering fashion, beauty, celebrity, and culture with a literary bent. Competitors include Vogue, Elle, and W Magazine, but Bazaar stakes its identity on artistic photography and sophisticated storytelling. Recent years have brought scrutiny: in 2020, the magazine faced criticism for a lack of racial diversity on covers, leading to internal changes. A 2023 article on quiet luxury sparked online debate about class and tone. Still, the magazine continues to adapt, marking its 150th anniversary in 2024 with a refreshed digital strategy.
