Hana to Yume

Hana to Yume, meaning "Flowers and Dreams" in Japanese and often abbreviated as HanaYume, is a prominent semi-monthly shōjo manga magazine. Published by Hakusensha, it first appeared in May 1974, marking Hakusensha's debut publication just five months after the company's establishment. Initially a monthly magazine, it adopted a bi-monthly schedule in January 1975, with new issues arriving on the 5th and the 20th of each month. The magazine is known for its B5 size and its distinctive bonus supplements, called 'furoku,' which have included items like drama CDs, pencil boards, extra manga anthologies, stationery, and calendars.

The magazine primarily caters to teenage girls, with romance as a central theme. However, it explores a wide array of subgenres, including contemporary slice-of-life stories, fantasy, science fiction, drama, and adventure. Hana to Yume is recognized for featuring strong female protagonists and complex emotional narratives, frequently weaving romantic elements with supernatural or fantastical settings. It has serialized many popular and influential series, such as the acclaimed Fruits Basket, Yona of the Dawn, Hana-Kimi, Skip Beat!, and Please Save My Earth. In a 2006 Oricon survey, it was ranked as the fourth favorite manga anthology among Japanese girls.

To mark its 50th anniversary in May 2024, a special exhibition titled "Party" was held at Tokyo City View in Roppongi Hills Mori Tower. This event featured a large celebratory cake, a replica of mangaka Mizuho Kusanagi's workspace, and displays illustrating the process of cover creation. The characteristic cover design for Hana to Yume's collected volumes, a stripe of red, white, and blue against a white background, has become an easily recognizable symbol associated with shōjo manga. Beyond Hana to Yume itself, Hakusensha also publishes related magazines, including Bessatsu Hana to Yume and The Hana to Yume, as well as the online platform Hana to Yume+, which debuted in April 2026.[edit]
