Hana-Kimi

Hana-Kimi, known in Japanese as Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (For You in Full Blossom), is a landmark shōjo manga series written and illustrated by Hisaya Nakajo. Serialized in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume magazine from September 20, 1996 to August 20, 2004, the series spans 23 volumes collected under the Hana to Yume Comics imprint. Viz Media released the English translation, with the final volume arriving in April 2008. The manga has sold over 17 million copies in Japan alone, cementing its status as a classic of the gender-bender genre.

The story follows Mizuki Ashiya, a Japanese-American girl living in the United States who becomes infatuated with Izumi Sano, a high jump champion she sees on television. Determined to meet him, she transfers to Japan and enrolls in Osaka Gakuen, the all-boys high school Sano attends—disguising herself as a boy. Mizuki must navigate life as a male student while hiding her secret from her classmates, the school nurse, and especially from Sano himself, who becomes her roommate. The series balances romantic comedy with themes of identity, friendship, and self-discovery.

Hana-Kimi has inspired numerous adaptations, including a 2007 Japanese live-action drama, a 2011 Japanese remake, a 2012 Korean drama titled To the Beautiful You, and a Taiwanese adaptation. An anime series produced by Signal.MD aired from January to March 2026, with a second season scheduled for July 2026. The series remains a touchstone for fans of romantic comedy manga, and its cross-dressing premise has influenced many later works. [edit]
