HammerFall

HammerFall is a Swedish power metal band from Gothenburg, formed in 1993 by guitarist Oscar Dronjak. They are known for their anthemic, fantasy-themed metal that has remained remarkably consistent for over three decades. With thirteen studio albums and a dedicated global fanbase, they are considered one of the most important acts in the power metal genre.

The band's sound is rooted in classic heavy metal, drawing from influences like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Accept. Their lyrics often explore medieval battles, templar imagery, and heroic tales. The mascot Hector, a paladin from a role-playing game, has appeared on most of their album covers, becoming a visual signature.

HammerFall began in 1993 when Oscar Dronjak, then guitarist of the death metal band Ceremonial Oath, decided to explore a more melodic, classic metal direction. After leaving Ceremonial Oath, he recruited Jesper Strömblad (drums, also of In Flames), Niklas Sundin (guitar), Johan Larsson (bass), and Mikael Stanne (vocals) to record a demo. The name HammerFall was inspired by a character from the 1983 fantasy film Krull.

The demo, First Hammer, was released in 1995 and attracted attention in the underground scene. However, lineup changes soon followed. Mikael Stanne left to focus on Dark Tranquillity, and Joacim Cans joined as lead vocalist in 1996. Guitarist Glenn Ljungström and bassist Fredrik Larsson also joined around this time. With this new lineup, HammerFall signed to Nuclear Blast Records and released their debut album Glory to the Brave in June 1997. The album was a breakthrough in Europe, reaching number 38 on the Swedish charts and establishing the band as a leading force in the power metal revival.

The early years were marked by relentless touring and a rapid succession of releases. Legacy of Kings (1998) won a Swedish Grammis for Best Hard Rock/Metal Album, and Renegade (2000) and Crimson Thunder (2001) solidified their global fanbase.
