Haikyu!!
Haruichi Furudate
Overview
Haruichi Furudate's Haikyu!! is a shonen manga that turns the simple act of spiking a volleyball into an electrifying saga of grit and growth. Serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from February 2012 to July 2020, the series spans 45 tankobon volumes. At its heart is Shoyo Hinata, a boy whose towering ambition defies his short frame. After witnessing a national championship match on TV, he becomes obsessed with the sport, joining his middle school team despite having no players. His raw determination catches the eye of Tobio Kageyama, a prodigious setter known as the "King of the Court." The two eventually become teammates at Karasuno High School, where their volatile partnership evolves into a devastating quick attack. The story tracks their journey through intense prefecture tournaments, national championships, and rivalries that push every player to their limits.
Furudate builds a world where every match feels like a war of attrition, with detailed play-by-play action and deep dives into each character's motivations. Unlike many sports manga that rely on superhuman feats, Haikyu!! grounds its drama in the real physics of volleyball, the angle of a spike, the timing of a block, the split-second decisions that decide a point. The supporting cast is equally rich: from the stoic captain Daichi Sawamura to the chaotic libero Yu Nishinoya, each player gets moments to shine. The manga's popularity spawned an anime adaptation by Production I.G, which aired four seasons between 2014 and 2020, totaling 85 episodes. A two-part film series, Haikyu!! Final, concludes the story, with the first part released in February 2024 and the second set for 2027.
Haikyu!! has been a commercial and critical powerhouse. It won the 61st Shogakukan Manga Award for the shonen category in 2016 and, by December 2025, had over 75 million copies in circulation worldwide. Viz Media handles the English manga release, while Sentai Filmworks distributes the anime. What makes the series endure is its refusal to treat height as destiny. Hinata's journey is about finding ways to soar without being tall, a metaphor that resonates far beyond the volleyball court. The manga balances high-stakes matches with quiet moments of camaraderie, making it as much about friendship as about sports.
