Gushing over Magical Girls

Utena Hiiragi sits in her middle school classroom, eyes glued to a poster of Tres Magia, the local magical girl team she idolizes. She dreams of joining them but never expects to be approached by Venalita, a mascot who offers her a place on the opposing side instead. The transformation turns Utena into Leopard, a villainess for the evil organization Magilumiere. This twist sets up a story where the protagonist spends her days fighting alongside the heroes she secretly admires while trying to keep her double life hidden from her friends and family.

The series launched on Takeshobo's Storia Dash website in March 2019, quickly gaining traction for its unique take on the genre. By early 2026, it had expanded to twelve collected volumes released by Bamboo Comics in Japan. Yen Press brought the manga to English-speaking audiences, translating the blend of slice-of-life comedy and action that defines the narrative. The work explores themes of gender expression and fandom through Utena's journey as she navigates the absurdity of being a villain who wants to protect the very people she is supposed to defeat.

Anime fans got their first look at the adaptation when Asahi Production aired the television series from January to March 2024. Sentai Filmworks licensed the show for streaming on HIDIVE outside Japan, introducing the vibrant animation and voice cast to a wider global audience. Viewers responded enthusiastically to the dynamic between Utena and the magical girls, with many praising the faithful yet energetic translation of the source material onto the screen. [edit]
