Gundam

The Gundam franchise began on April 7, 1979, when Yoshiyuki Tomino's Mobile Suit Gundam first aired on Japanese television. Produced by the animation studio Sunrise, the show was initially a ratings disappointment, cut from 52 episodes to 43. But reruns and the surprise success of its plastic model kits, marketed as Gunpla starting in 1980, turned it into a phenomenon. Tomino's approach, treating giant robots as military hardware rather than superheroes, gave birth to the real robot subgenre, a sharp departure from the super robot shows that dominated the 1970s.

Today Gundam is a sprawling multimedia enterprise. More than 50 television series, films, original video animations, manga, novels, and video games bear its name. The Gunpla line alone commands over 90 percent of Japan's character plastic model market. In the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, April through June 2025, the franchise generated roughly ¥65.4 billion in IP-related revenue, roughly $443 million, making it Bandai Namco's most valuable property. Cumulative lifetime retail sales are estimated to exceed $10 billion.

The franchise's reach extends beyond screens and shelves. Life-size moving Gundam statues stand in Tokyo and Yokohama. A live-action film is in development at Legendary Entertainment, directed by Jim Mickle. The most recent television series, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (2022-2023), became a global hit. Gundam has also faced criticism over plastic waste from Gunpla production, leading Bandai Namco to introduce eco-friendly Eco-Pla kits. Censorship of blood in Western broadcasts, such as the Toonami edit of Gundam Wing, has drawn minor controversy.[edit]
