    About

The Guinea-Bissau men's national football team represents the West African nation in international competitions under the Football Federation of Guinea-Bissau. Fans and media often refer to the squad as the Djurtus, a local term for a type of wild cat, or occasionally as Os Dromedários. The team plays its home fixtures at either the Estádio 24 de Setembro or the Estádio Lino Correia in Bissau, wearing kits that feature the national colors of red, yellow, and green.

While the Djurtus have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, they established themselves as a competitive force in West Africa by securing four consecutive spots at the Africa Cup of Nations between 2017 and 2023. This run marked a significant evolution for the country after years of struggle. Despite reaching the continental tournament multiple times, the team has yet to win a knockout match or progress past the group stage in any of those appearances.

    History

Guinea-Bissau entered the World Cup qualification cycle for the first time in 1998. Their opening campaign featured a dramatic start against Guinea-Conakry; the team won their home leg but ultimately fell short in the return match. Early years were defined by limited resources and inconsistent results until Baciro Candé took charge during his first stint from 2001 to 2009. He returned to the role in 2016, guiding the squad through a period of sustained growth that culminated in back-to-back AFCON qualifications.

The modern era peaked with four straight appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations starting in 2017. The team reached a peak FIFA ranking of 68th in late 2016 before dipping to 195th in early 2010. As of June 2026, they sit at 132nd. Leadership changes followed the 2023 tournament when Luís Boa Morte was hired in 2024. His tenure ended quickly, leading to Emiliano Té taking over as head coach in 2025 to steer the team toward future qualifiers.
