Founded in June 1954, Guangzhou Football Club began as a modest entity wandering the lower tiers of Chinese football for decades. The narrative shifted dramatically in 2010 when the Evergrande Real Estate Group acquired the club, injecting massive capital that turned the team into an Asian powerhouse. Under the guidance of managers like Marcello Lippi and Fabio Cannavaro, the squad dominated domestic competition with eight Chinese Super League titles between 2011 and 2019.

The club reached historic heights by winning the AFC Champions League in 2013 and 2015, becoming the first Chinese side to claim the prestigious continental trophy. Stars like Elkeson, Conca, and Zheng Zhi formed a formidable roster that attracted global attention, including multiple appearances at the FIFA Club World Cup. Their success was built on a financial model reliant entirely on the real estate giant's spending power.

That empire collapsed alongside its parent company. Following relegation from the top flight in December 2022 after a twelve-year streak, the club struggled to survive without its primary backer. Mounting debts became insurmountable, leading to the official dissolution of the franchise on January 6, 2025. The club traces its roots back to 1954, making it one of the oldest football institutions in China. For the first half-century, the team fluctuated between divisions without achieving major silverware. The turning point arrived in 2010 when Evergrande Group purchased the struggling outfit and renamed it Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao. This acquisition triggered a period of unprecedented dominance under legendary Italian manager Marcello Lippi, who led the team to their first league title in 2011.

Lippi returned for a second stint later, but the golden era truly solidified when Fabio Cannavaro took over as player-manager in 2014. The squad won the AFC Champions League in 2013 and again in 2015, defeating Al-Ahli and Al-Hilal respectively. They also secured four Chinese Super Cups and two FA Cups during this run. The team played home matches at Tianhe Stadium, where crowds often exceeded 50,000 spectators creating an intimidating atmosphere for visitors.

The downfall began with the broader economic crisis affecting the Evergrande Group. In December 2022, the club suffered its first-ever relegation from the Chinese Super League to China League One. Despite attempts to rebuild with young players and reduce costs, the mounting debts proved fatal.
