About
The Neighbourhood operates as a five-piece alternative rock ensemble defined by a cohesive visual and sonic identity. Current members include lead singer Jesse Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassist Mikey Margott, and drummer Brandon Fried. The group is currently active, having resumed full operations in 2025 after a two-year suspension. Their music reaches millions of listeners globally, with over 47 million monthly streams on Spotify as of late 2026. Fans connect deeply with the band's introspective lyrics and minimalist black-and-white aesthetic that permeates every aspect of their public image.
Despite facing significant personal controversy involving their drummer in 2022, the band managed to navigate a return to the stage without losing their core audience. The 2026 Wourld Tour demonstrated their enduring appeal, selling out major arenas across Europe and North America. Their sound has evolved from lo-fi indie tracks to polished production while retaining the melancholic undertones that originally attracted listeners.
Formation Story
The group formed in 2011 when Jesse Rutherford, Jeremy Freedman, and Zach Abels met during their time at high school and college in the San Fernando Valley area of California. They began writing songs together in informal settings, eventually recruiting Mikey Margott on bass and Brandon Fried on drums to complete the lineup. Before securing a record deal, the band operated entirely independently, releasing two self-produced EPs titled I'm Sorry... in late 2012 and Thank You in early 2013. These early releases built a cult following online through word-of-mouth and social media sharing.
Columbia Records noticed the buzz surrounding their independent work and signed the band in mid-2013. Their official debut studio album, I Love You., arrived shortly thereafter on April 23, 2013. The project was not an instant commercial explosion but grew steadily through radio play and digital discovery. The track "Sweater Weather" served as the catalyst for their mainstream breakthrough, though it did not chart highly upon its initial release. It took nearly two years for the song to gain momentum, eventually climbing the charts and becoming one of the most streamed tracks in history.

Musical Style
The Neighbourhood's sound is rooted in alternative rock but incorporates elements of dark pop, indie rock, and hip-hop influences. Lead vocalist Jesse Rutherford utilizes a distinctive falsetto and often employs spoken-word delivery techniques that contrast with traditional singing styles. The instrumentation typically features clean electric guitars layered with synthesizers and heavy bass lines that create a dense, atmospheric texture.
Lyrically, the band explores themes of mental health, relationships, and existential dread. Their production style shifted significantly between albums. I Love You. retained a raw, lo-fi quality, whereas Wiped Out! introduced polished, radio-ready arrangements. The 2020 concept album Chip Chrome & the Mono-Tones ventured into funk and soul territory, showcasing their willingness to experiment beyond their established formula. Recent work like (((ultraSOUND))) returned to a heavier, more aggressive rock sound.

Cultural Impact
The band played a pivotal role in popularizing the "sad boy" aesthetic of the 2010s. Their consistent use of monochromatic visuals, specifically black clothing and sunglasses, influenced fashion trends among young adults and alternative musicians. This visual identity became so synonymous with the group that it is often referenced in discussions about modern rock styling.
"Sweater Weather" stands as a cultural touchstone, bridging the gap between indie credibility and mainstream pop success. The song's longevity on streaming platforms and its resurgence via TikTok have introduced the band to multiple generations of listeners. Their ability to maintain relevance despite industry shifts highlights their adaptability and connection with fans who value emotional authenticity in their music.
Fandom Culture
Fans refer to themselves as Neighborhoods or NBHD. The community is known for its strong emotional connection to the band's lyrics, often creating fan projects that explore the themes of vulnerability found in the music. The official fan color is black, reflecting the group's aesthetic. During live performances, the crowd frequently sings along to every word, creating a communal atmosphere of shared experience. The lightstick used by fans is a simple, sleek black design that matches the band's branding.
Awards Won (4)
The Neighbourhood has won two major industry awards despite being absent from many mainstream categories. They secured the MTV Video Music Award for Best Alternative Video in 2016 for their track "Daddy Issues." Additionally, they took home the iHeartRadio Music Award for Rock Song of the Year in 2016 for "Sweader Weather." While they have faced nominations for other prestigious honors, these wins highlight their specific impact on the alternative rock genre.
