Stratovarius

Stratovarius is a Finnish power metal band that has been active since 1984. As of now, the band is active and continues to perform and record. The current lineup consists of Timo Kotipelto on vocals, Jens Johansson on keyboards, Lauri Porra on bass, Matias Kupiainen on guitar, and Rolf Pilve on drums. This lineup has been stable since 2012, making it the longest-tenured in the band's history.

The band is known for its fast, melodic power metal sound, characterized by soaring vocals, neoclassical keyboard runs, and twin guitar harmonies. Over the years, they have released sixteen studio albums, with several reaching the top of the Finnish charts. Stratovarius began in August 1984 as a Helsinki-based cover band called Black Water. The original lineup featured drummer and vocalist Tuomo Lassila, guitarist Staffan Stråhlman, bassist John Vihervä, and later keyboardist Antti Ikonen. The band played a mix of hard rock and heavy metal covers, but soon began writing original material.

In the summer of 1985, the band changed its name to Stratovarius, a portmanteau of Stradivarius and the Fender Stratocaster guitar. Shortly after, Timo Tolkki replaced Stråhlman on guitar, and the band started recording demos. Their debut album, Fright Night, was released in 1989 through CBS Finland, with Tolkki handling all songwriting and vocals.

The early 1990s were a period of transition. The band went through several bassists, including Jari Behm and Jyrki Lentonen, before settling on Jari Kainulainen in 1993. In 1994, Tolkki stepped down from vocal duties to focus on guitar, and Timo Kotipelto joined as lead singer. This change brought a new dynamic to the band's sound, which became more melodic and polished.

After the release of Fourth Dimension in 1995, Lassila and Ikonen left the band, replaced by drummer Jörg Michael and keyboardist Jens Johansson. This lineup, often called the "classic lineup," went on to record eight albums over the next ten years, including Episode, Visions, and Infinite. These albums established Stratovarius as a leading force in power metal worldwide.

In 2008, after a period of internal tension, Tolkki left the band, initially planning to disband it. However, the remaining members decided to continue, recruiting guitarist Matias Kupiainen and bassist Lauri Porra. The new lineup released Polaris in 2009, which was seen as a strong comeback.
