Sistar disbanded in 2017, but their music still defines summer in K-pop. The group is remembered for an unbroken streak of nine number-one singles on the Gaon Digital Chart, a feat matched by only a handful of artists. Their sound, built around Hyolyn's powerhouse vocals and bright, danceable production, made them a constant presence on year-end best-of lists and streaming playlists.

Today, each member has pursued solo careers. Hyolyn remains with Starship and releases music steadily; Bora acts and raps; Soyou has released solo singles and OSTs; Dasom works as an actress. Fans still gather under the fandom name STAR1, celebrating the group's catalog every summer.[edit]

Starship Entertainment, a new agency at the time, began assembling Sistar in 2009. CEO Kim Shi-dae wanted a group that could combine strong vocals with stage presence. Hyolyn, who had trained at JYP Entertainment and appeared on Mnet's Superstar K in 2009, was the first member recruited. Her powerful voice became the group's foundation.

Bora, a former taekwondo athlete, joined after impressing with her rap skills and dance ability. Soyou, who had trained under Cube Entertainment, brought a sweet yet sturdy vocal tone. Dasom, the youngest, was scouted through an audition and added visual appeal. The four trained together for less than a year before their debut.

On June 3, 2010, Sistar released "Push Push," a mid-tempo R&B track that introduced their sassy, confident image. The song didn't chart high, but it got attention. Their follow-up "Shady Girl" and "How Dare You" showed gradual improvement. The breakthrough came in August 2011 with So Cool, the title track of their first studio album. Producer Brave Brothers crafted most of their hits, blending catchy synth hooks with a driving beat. Hyolyn's belt was the centerpiece, often carrying the climax of songs like "Alone" and "Give It to Me."

Lyrically, Sistar's songs were confident and playful, often about love, independence, and having fun. Their "summer queen" concept meant bright music videos, colorful styling, and choreography that felt spontaneous. Sistar didn't just make summer songs, they owned the season. Their annual summer comebacks became a K-pop tradition, with fans anticipating the release like a holiday. Beyond music, Sistar served as ambassadors for the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, a sign of their mainstream recognition. Their fashion, bold colors, crop tops, and sporty looks, was widely copied. STAR1, Sistar's official fandom, was named to reflect the group's name (sister + star). Their official color is fuchsia, and the lightstick is shaped like a pink microphone with the group's logo. Fans organized streaming parties for every comeback, especially summer releases, and held charity projects in the members' names.

Even after disbandment, STAR1 remains active online, sharing memories and supporting the members' solo work. Annual summer listening parties are a tradition, with fans flooding streaming platforms on June 3 to celebrate the debut anniversary.[edit]

The group's name is a portmanteau of "sister" and "star," reflecting their concept of being like sisters and shining stars. Hyolyn was the only member to re-sign with Starship after disbandment; Bora moved to Hook Entertainment, Soyou to Hinge Entertainment, and Dasom to H& Entertainment. Bora was a taekwondo athlete before becoming a rapper. Dasom is the youngest (maknae) and also an actress, starring in dramas like Meloholic.[edit]
